Marilyn Monroe’s Lips

Statement

This is about the subversive cultural violence that submits women to sometimes very unhealthy expectations, to suffer for beauty. Lead based powder was popular in the middle ages. The red in lipstick sold during the 1940's was carcinogenic. Today they just discovered some foundations have a chemical in them that actually damages the skin. Some women are completely unaware of these pitfalls, they actually look down on those that might not comply; i.e. arm pit hair.

In the 1950’s many women wore bright red lipstick. As a child, I remember her carefully applying it. Women are most vulnerable to cultural rules on how women should appear. This requires balance and awareness of who we are verses what society imposes on us.

Poem stitched/written on face of quilt reads “My mother wore bright red lipstick. In 1976, red dye#2 was found to be carcinogenic. She died in 1986 of breast cancer. My children never knew her.”

To quote Arundhati Roy "Another world is possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.”

My focus with this quilt was to make a pieced quilt into an single image as a painting. Inspiration strike with the thought of a ‘return’ hug from my favorite subject. The Tree Hugged Back is a delightful aha moment. I realized that the tree did hug me back, in return, albeit metaphysically.
